Client Brief

A modern classic design with Asian touches and pops of bright colour was the request of my clients for their London family townhouse. Whilst they wanted the living spaces to be more subdued in terms of colour and style, they requested I to go ‘all out’ in the bedrooms and study. Their passion for Chinese style furniture, accessories, fabrics and wallcovering was paramount, along with the rich colours of red, mustard and teal so often associated with Asian interiors. Whilst they asked for a modern design, they also wanted to maintain a classic feel, in line with the Victorian provenance of the house.

My Design Solution

Keen to create with colour, I began with the master bedroom, where I opted for a modern Chinoiserie style wallpaper. I chose a similar coffee colour for the remaining walls and picked out the mustard yellow for cushions and bedspread. I introduced turquoise Chinese chests for bedside tables and a vintage crystal chandelier. In the teenage daughter’s bedroom, I mixed a heady combination of yellow and red, and resolved her request for a futon, with a thick floor mattress covered in a kitsch Chinese fabric. The study got a similar colour treatment complete with Chinese lamp, whilst downstairs the feel was more restful, with pale celadon blue and pops of apple green.
